Burning 6'2" on our shores now :)

The 6'2" burning has arrived, and from first impressions seems to be well worth the wait! I've not yet had a chance to put it through its paces in decent waves, but have had it out on the water, and it seems to be a fine piece of kit, even lighter than the 5'8", good upwind and a real pleasure to gybe. Looking forward to some easterly swells to give it a good test!

  1. I want one, I want-want-want. I have 3 twin-tips, 1 mutant which can ride 50/50 and three surf-boards of varying size.

    I need help.

  2. Hmmm. Nice, but I've got old surfboards coming out my ears. Looking nice for the east coast this week!

  3. Hi George or maybe Pete, is the 6' 2" big enough for strapless at the learning-stage. I have a suitably cheap NSP fish that I'm using at present but there's a limit to the pogo-ing damage in the shore-break this poor board can take. I very-much like the 5' 8" strapped but I don't think it's big-enough for strapless even after my skills improve.

I'm such a sad-git, I find satisfaction in ownership just as-much as in practical use.

Still painting and cutting grass and waiting for wind.

  4. Hi richard

Im a novice when it comes to waves and surfboards. I had my first go on a surfboard a couple of months ago. It was the burning 5'8 which pete has had on demo. Ive used it quite a few times since then and i'm yet to try it with the straps on.

From my first go I found it really easy to ride strapless and even on my first go I managed carving turns too and from toeside. Gybing was another matter though but im starting to get them nailed now.

I recieved my new 6'2 yesterday and it looks great.

The wind and swell forecast is looking good for the next couple of days on the north east coast so ill let you know how it rides and if its easier to ride strapless over the 5'8

  5. Thanks Jamie.

I have to learn to gybe, toe-side isn't an option for me unfortunately. I love riding the Burning 5' 8" strapped but it seems a little small for strapless. Flying the Chrono with the that quad-fin under my feet gets me very high upwind and it's small-enough not to cause problems with landings if I accidently pop-off the top of wave.

I was going to sell the 5' 8" then buy the 6' 2" but I don't want to sell the 5' 8". I need therapy.

    Richard.

I'll look forward to hearing how you feel about the 6' 2" Jamie

  6. Richard,

The 6'2" would be ideal for learning to ride strapless. Enough volume to get planing early yet not too much to make it a pig! I was riding my 5'8" Burning strapless but it just didn't feel enough like a regular surfboard for my liking so have chucked some straps on it for high wind, huge swell days and now just ride my regular surfboard.

  7. I've ridden the 5'8" and got fairly comfortable with it strapless, but trying the 6'2" made it so much easier in the gybes and when less powered. I struggled initially with the extra width, due to the increased leverage on your feet, but I was feeling very comfortable within an hour, and loving the extra length and volume.

The basics of strapless riding aren't significantly easier (getting out through waves etc.) but when you want to turn you'll find it much easier.

  8. Thanks both George and Pete, initially I was to sell the 5'8" to fund buying the 6'2" but the 5'8" is sooo-good with straps on days over 15 knots with a 4-to-6 foot swell and a driving shore-break. Clearly you've both made a case for me having both-boards and selling the NSP fish to one of the local surfers though quite frankly the Fish is just as suitable for my learning curve.

I'm just a sucker for nice boards and whilst I'm not going to claim the Takoon 5'8" is the best, it-is the most balance kite-surf board I've owned in respect to the foot-beds placings.

I'll give Angelo a call next week.

    Richard.

  9. Hi Guys. I had my first session on the 6'2", your comments pretty-much sum-up my experience. For my first ride the 6'2" was an inapropriate choice considering my 75 kilo's together with wind/sea-state. I wasn't riding in waves, this was large chop or maybe better described as a one-foot swell.

Bouncing all-over the place and my first thoughts were how-well the Burning 5'8" would have handled those conditions.

I was riding it strapped and of-course my intension is not to use straps once I'm a little more skilled.

In hindsight having both the 5'8" and 6'2" would be a good choice for varying conditions. My old and battered NSP 6' fish continues to be my learning platform though like most of you,'I'm not getting enough'.

    Regards
    Richard
